New Model Aims To Predict Quick Climate Changes

Inconvenient Truth of the Day

A new computer simulation aims to provide a model for understanding more accurately some of the causes and effects of rapid climate changes. Hopefully the model can provide us with a clearer indication of how greenhouse gas emissions have contributed to our shifting climate to better understand what needs to take place in order to reduce our impact.  Obviously, we can't rely soley on the data provided by one simulation to determine what action we should be taking, but it sure sounds like a thorough analysis.  What amazes me is that because of the enormous amounts of data from a diverse group of experts, and the need for massive supercomputers, the model can only be run once!  Let's hope nobody falls asleep at the switch.

The simulation, based upon the National Center for Atmospheric Research's Community Climate System Model, began modelling around 21,000 years ago, at the peak of the last ice age, and right now is analyzing data from around 10,000 years ago.  Keep your eye on Science for updates on the modelling progress, and while you're waiting find out below what you can do to help solve the climate crisis.
