Rebecca Cammisa's Which Way Home

Screening : Fri, May 01, 5:30PM

A film about a troubling subject, Which Way Home looks at the world of Latin American migrants, specifically children, that are desperately trying to get to the United States.   The route many of these children take is to illegally ride the train - or "the beast" as it is called, due to the many lives it takes.  Throughout the film we mainly follow 4 boys who are all seeking a better life in the United States and who are willing to take the huge risks that accompany their journey.

What really struck me about the film was getting to see all the people that make up the train journey.  There are those riding the actual train (a disturbing mix of mostly adult men and children) and those who help them along the way.  I was surprised to learn about various groups that provide support to the migrants.  The first main group is the Grupo Beta, a Mexican government funded humanitarian organization founded in the early 1990s. Driving through the desert regions south of the border in brightly painted orange trucks, Grupo Beta's job is to protect migrants along the border, not arrest them.

Also present on the journey are various shelters for the migrants to rest in and local folks who offer the travellers food.   It was kind of extraordinary to see all the people that offer their skills and resources to help the migrants on their way.  It was also heartbreaking to watch the children as they kept moving forward despite many warnings from the shelters and Grupo Beta.  Each of the children the film follows had their moment to tell why they were leaving their homes.  Almost all of them came from homes with parents who didn't care about them or where one parent was already currently in the United States.  In their minds they had nothing to lose by trying.  This was hard for me to watch, as I know that life in the United States would not be that much better for any of the film's protagonists.  These are moments of extreme hopelessness.

In the end though, what comes out of the film is a message of hope, as there needs to be a serious discussion about immigration policy and about by both sides of the border.  Having a situation where so many children are risking their lives to try and come here is pretty unaccetpable.  Thankfully, Which Way Home is a film that informs and inspires- as the first step in creating real change is to give people the knowledge of what is actually happening - and that is an incredibly hopeful thing.

I saw this documentary about a month or two ago, I was very touched and felt at though I can't just sit and live my life like there is nothing going on. I would like to know how to possibly adopt any one of these strong willed children into my home. Is there anyway any one can give me information about how I might go about this?

If you ever wanted to see a picture of intestinal fortitude-these kids provided that along with so much of our own desires that we here in the states live. this is precisely the type of people who made this country great! these are kids who are displaying this strenth and hope not only for themselves but for their loved one, who for the most part didnt want nothing to do with them, god I am almost ashamed to see this fearlessness compared with how I grew up here in u.s.I am convinced now more than ever just how much I under estimate the young, there is room for this kind of attitude not only here in the U.S. but in the world.I truly wonder how many adult americans could take that type of jouney on in the face of so many unknowns not to mention the danger. I am truly ashame because I was one that believed the fence wasnt long enough.now I have seen first hand what made america great,it was all in the of these kids

It was very hard to hold back the tears when I saw this movie. Both my parents immigrated here as teenagers in a similar way. My mother left my two older brothers behind. If they had not done so I don't know where I would be right now. I hope that when people see this movie that they will take a step back before they judge. Many people would risk death for a dream than continue living in circumstances they are under. Fortunately, my parents made it. There must be some way we can help. If there is please let us know asap.

I just saw the documentary today Which Way Home and as a Mom am very concerned for the 9 year old boy and girl. Do you know if they have been found yet and if they are ok. It made me heartsick to see these kids as well as all the kids in the film. I would love to hear information on them and how they are doing. May God bless them all.
