The Obama administration will begin direct talks with the Iranian government over the pressing issue of Iran's nuclear program. The diplomatic talks will also include delegations from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, China and Russia. United States officials also announced that next month Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's special adviser on Iran, Dennis Ross, will visit the Sunni allies of American in the Persian Gulf region to consult on a new approach to the Shiite nation of Iran.
The White House is also thought to be considering direct, one on one negotiations with Iran. Such overtures are obviously a dramatic departure from the gunboat diplomacy style of President Obama's predecessor George W. Bush. But they serve as more than just a contrast with an unpopular former President. If the United States is to make any headway in improving relations with the Middle East it should seem obvious that a dramatic new approach is required. While the Iranian government certainly has more than its share of disturbing policies in place, we're guaranteed to get nowhere in improving relations with the Middle East if we refuse to even talk to one of the largest powers in the region. You can takepart in learning more about the Middle East by checking out the Middle East Research and Information Project.
