The government of China is blocking YouTube according to the video sharing website's parent company, Google. YouTube spokesman Scott Rubin told the press "We don’t know the reason for the block.  Our government relations people are trying to resolve it."

However speculation about China's reasoning for the censorship has centered around the recent posting of a video of Chinese police officers apparently beating Tibetan protesters in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa.  The video was recently reported onby China's state run Xinhua news agency which accused the Dalai Lama, whose Tibetan government in exile posted the video clip, of doctoring the footage.

It's worth pointing out that centuries ago Chinese Emperors built the longest wall in history to keep out unwanted influence on China, with little success.  The constraints placed on the Internet by China's current leadership will prove just as porous in the long run as the Great Wall did eons ago.You can takepart in learning more about China by checking out Asia Society.
