Homeless and Blogging: The Girl's Guide To Homelessness

Our friend Mark at Invisible People has posted another eye-opening video, this time interviewing Brianna, a recently homeless young woman who writes A Girl's Guide To Homelessness, a blog about her circumstances.  Both Brianna and Mark are brilliantly utilizing social media to raise awareness about the difficulties of homelessness and the need to address the problem on a national scale. Once again we're reminded about how easily someone can become homeless and how stereotypes fail to comprehend the complex situations facing far too many people in this country.  Brianna explains:

I am an educated woman with stable employment and residence history. I am a career executive assistant - coherent, opinionated, poised, and capable. If you saw me walking down the street, you wouldn't assume that I live in a parking lot. In short, I am just like you - except without the convenience of a permanent address.

And learn more about her story here:

I'm also homeless right now. Like Bri, I have a laptop and cell phone (donated by my wonderful brother). Thank God for free Wi-fi! These are necessary tools for making a better life for yourself. Like the tagline for her blog says, just because you're homeless doesn't mean you're a bum.

I have to say I have never read a blog....just never got into them. For whatever reason I got up at 4 am today and started working..I think I was checking news on mns or yahoo and fell into this blog. Fell deep.....did not stopo reading until 6:30. You go girl! I am now hooked but for some reason I am getting a forbidden message when I go to you blog. Hopefully I can figure it out. At any rate in 2 1\2 hours you changed my views about several things. You are touching lives

In our lives, we suffer a lot.. We walk through on several trials, that causes us to give up. Sometimes we think life is so unfair because of the hindrance we’ve been through. We struggle a lot to survive, but when things went wrong and everything is gone, we find someone to blame on and ask “why me?”..But things are just not constant, things may come and go, if not today, tommorrow, or never. But we need to value things that comes along our way, looking back the past may serve as our guidance to a new and better path forward..

“Every problem has a gift inside. We seek problems because we want their gifts.”

Wow, this is so crazy. Thanks, Danny, for posting about me - I actually just bought the book "the Soloist" a few days ago, and can't wait for the movie.

Katie - thank you so much for your support. It sounds like you've come a long way from where you were, and I am proud of you - I can only imagine how difficult it must be to overcome all of the things that you did, and I hope some day I can demonstrate a similar amount of strength and resilience :)

Lamp - I have always admitted that I have it so much better off than so many homeless out there. In fact, I'm pretty sure I say so in the interview. It is because I have it better off, and have more resources at my disposal, that I hope to be able to use them to contribute back, and help put the issue out there.

Hi Peter - thanks so much for the support. It sounds like you are doing extremely valuable work up there in Sacramento! Best of luck, you are helping many people who might otherwise be overlooked.

Thank you for your courage. I believe many homeless need to raise their personal self-esteem, strive to be better prepared for emergency housing situations and keep their self-love within and love others despite their flaws. I help the homeless here in Sacramento and homeless people are my people. ~Email: peter.lopez51@yahoo.com

you are such a strong woman- god bless you, i am the same age and have been faced with the same issues, i turned to drugs to escape the misery and ended up in a bad and abusive relatiopnship and losing my child to my mentally illmother and her acoholic husband. you are so bright and positive, i only wish i had your enthusiasm, instead i fell apart under pressure and just gave up. you can do this!! dont give up ur dog-he/she will be a great companion and comfort u when u need it. i know i dont know u, but i am so proud of u and wish i could have acted in the same manner- good luck, i will pray for you - i have faith in you!!!
