Obamas Host Stevie Wonder at The White House
President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama played host last night to Stevie Wonder at The White House. The President took the occasion to present the music legend with The Library of Congress' Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. The wonderful Mr. Wonder returned the favor by performing live for the Obamas and their guests along with fellow musicians Tony Bennett, Diana Krall, Mary Mary and more.
Michelle Obama said in her introduction of Stevie Wonder, "We honor a man whose music and lyrics I fell in love with when I was a litte girl. The first album I ever bought was Stevie Wonder's 'Talking Book'...Years later when I discovered what Stevie meant when he sang about love, Barack and I chose the song 'You and I' as our wedding song."
"I think it's fair to say that had I not been a Stevie Wonder fan, Michelle might not have dated me", said the President. It truly feels good not only to have a President and First Lady with good taste in music, but also to see Stevie Wonder singing to an African-American, Democratic President, after all those years of performing at Democratic rallies and the Democratic National Convention. This is a man who has not only brought an incredible gift of music to the world, but also has tirelessly worked for what he believes in politically. Last night he had the chance to truly enjoy the fruits of this labor.
