Ancient Energy People first harnessed the wind’s energy over 2,000 years ago in China and the Middle East to pump water and grind grain. By 1890, windmills were generating electricity in Denmark.
A Change in Course From 2003 to 2008, the U.S. quadrupled its wind energy capacity and became the world leader in wind power. Wind now provides as much power as 90,000 barrels of oil each year.
20% by 2030 Currently, less than 2% of U.S. energy is wind-based. However, Department of Energy goals include substantial growth in this area: by 2030 one-fifth of U.S. energy could come from wind. Deep-water offshore wind farms and bamboo turbine blades are just part of wind power’s future.
