Plastic Consumption
2,000,000 plastic bottles are thrown away every 5 minutes in the U.S.
Hooked on disposables?
Since being introduced in 1977, plastic bags have held a prominent spot on checkout lines at grocery stores and major retailers. The bottled water industry has also made huge profits in the last decade. Both of these products, along with the abundance of plastic ware, have taken a toll on the environment.
Rarely are plastic bags and bottles recycled, and if they go to landfills, it takes decades to decompose. An alternative, incineration, emits dioxin and carbon dioxide, contributing to global warming. A backlash on both products, due to the popular green movement, has led to an influx of cloth shopping bags and reusable water bottles paving the way for alternatives to plastic use in the future.
