Class Size
Studies show that students in overcrowded classrooms pay less attention, skip school more often, and achieve less than other students. In New York, there are 4,303 overcrowded classrooms, causing nearly 120,000 high school students to be in classes that exceed 34 students. This is why schools in New York and other urban communities are focused on finding solutions for overcrowding.
High construction costs along with tight budgets are forcing school officials to redesignate space that is already available. Many school districts are also looking into other ways to rectify the crowding problem, including busing to schools that are not overcrowded, extending school days, or establishing year-round schedules. With ingenuity and budget increases, the issue of overcrowding can be better addressed.
