Charter Schools
Over 1.4 Million U.S. Students Are Enrolled in Charter Schools
Specialized. Smaller. Better?
Alternative Choice Charter schools provide an alternative to public schools. Operating under a charter, they have more flexibility in curriculum and teaching methods, but must still meet state education standards.
A Little Class More than 4,700 charter schools in 40 states are in operation, with 365,000 kids on waiting lists. Many of these schools have small classes and specialize in specific topics, which proponents say produces higher test scores.
Performance Issues But 83% of students in charter schools perform only as well as or worse than their counterparts in public schools. Others say charter schools drain funds from public schools. Who is right?
