Rails-to-Trails Conservancy
Connecting people, places, past and present to build healthier communities for the future.
For 24 years, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy has been preserving our national railroading heritage, helping to save thousands of miles of unused railroad corridors by transforming them into public trails for fun, healthy recreation and transportation.
Good for the body, good for the community and good for the planet, rail-trails link our past to our present and help define the future of how we move about our American landscape.
From backyard community trails, to cross-country rural escapes, to integrated city trail systems, more than 19,500 miles of rail-trails nationwide are enjoyed by millions of people every day. Deep tunnels and staggering trestles, mountain passes and shadowed ravines, open prairies and stunning cityscapes—all are views to be seen from a rail-trail. Both beautiful and useful, rail-trails are perfect for biking to school or work, walking to the store, running for fitness, bird-watching, or playing with friends and family.
More than 150,000 people already support our trail-building, advocacy and mapping work for the rail-trail movement. As Rails-to-Trails Conservancy creates more programs to develop trails in underserved neighborhoods and urban environments, the public enthusiasm for trails grows.
If you have ever used and enjoyed a rail-trail, you know how special these pathways are. With more than 1,600 rail-trails to choose from nationwide, you’re bound to find the perfect fit. Visit www.railstotrails.org today to find yourself on a trail tomorrow.
