The situation in Darfur is dire, and George Clooney wants you to hear about it. Continuing his role as a UN Messenger of Peace, Clooney has been speaking about his recent trip to the troubled region. He has been urging the UN to provide the proper tools to peacekeepers so that they can do their job well and actually make a difference:Mr. Clooney said that during his visit to Darfur, he noticed that locals witnessing the arrival of UN peacekeepers have started to "feel a new energy in the air. They feel for the first time that this is the moment that the rest of the world, all of the nations, united, are stepping in to help them
"When I stood in the hospital next to women who had been raped and set on fire two days earlier, they looked up to me and said, 'Please send the UN.' Not the US; not China; not Russia; just the UN. You're their only hope." [allAfrica.com]
Clooney has also been speaking about his specific role in all of this, noting that it's getting more and more difficult to get important news on the national and international radar these days. He recognizes that as a celebrity, he can get more people to learn about Darfur just by going there and bringing a camera himself.
