It’s late, I know, but you still get your Sunday vegetarian of awesome, and this week it’s none other than Morrissey, from The Smiths, and also his solo stuff. Now, to be honest, Morrissey sometimes gets on my nerves about how sad he always seems to be, but you can’t take away from him that he can write a great song, even today. Here’s “Irish Blood, English Heart,” which came out, let’s say, three years ago?
Like I said and like you already knew, Morrissey led The Smiths (which also featured former Sunday vegetarian Johnny Marr, now of Modest Mouse). Read the rest of this entry >>

Okay, no time to dilly dally Sunday Awesome Vegetarian blah blah blah Stuart Murdoch of Belle and Sebastian. Belle and Sebastian are Scottish, which means they’re from Ireland or something, and write really great…let’s check the hipster dictionary…”wistful pop,” says one website. Judge for yourself what that means. But it’s good. It’s very good.
There we had “The State That I Am In,” from Tigermilk. Read the rest of this entry >>

It’s Sunday, which means it’s time for me to tell you the Sunday Vegetarian of Awesomeness, and let’s check the master roster…and, oh, good, today we’ll do Matt Skiba, of Alkaline Trio. Alkaline Trio is a super rad punk band, and that being said, you can just assume every video I post will have some bad words. Okay? Good. Now that we’ve got that out of the way, here’s a live rendition of Alkaine Trio’s (possibly) best song, “Radio,” the final track on of Maybe I’ll Catch Fire. It’s…how we say…bitter? Let’s go with bitter.
The band has been pretty consistent, in that all the lyrics on all the albums are pretty angry, about, well, anything. Read the rest of this entry >>

Your Sunday Morning Extremely Awesome Vegetarian Post is another one I probably should have written about, oh, fifteen years ago, because it’s Thom Yorke, of Radiohead. I mean…Radiohead. It’s good stuff. Where to begin…where to begin…how about “How to Disappear Completely,” off Kid A? It might be my favorite song of theirs, but that’s kind of like picking your favorite child, or so I’m told. But the resolve of dissonance we get around the 5:15 mark wins.
I had the chance to see Radiohead live, once, about two years ago, and it’s even more amazing then that clip shows. I probably don’t need to go over the history of Radiohead - you know who they are, you know what they play, so let’s see what else we can find to keep you interested. How about this little youtube gem: previous Awesome Vegetarian Michael Stipe singing lead on “Lucky,” which comes from OK Computer (after the jump). Read the rest of this entry >>

Your Super Tremendous Awesome Sunday Vegetarian today is hip hop artist and sometimes actor Common. His albums tend to have some very deep lyrics, as well as some of the more familiar territory about the ladies and whatnot. Here’s something from the former category. It’s off his latest album, Finding Forever, and it’s called “The People.” There might be some questionable words.
My favorite song he’s ever recorded is short, sweet, and leaves you wanting to listen to it again and again and again. Read the rest of this entry >>

Your Super Sunday Vegetarian of Awesomeness for today is Paul McCartney (SIR Paul McCartney to you), of this band called The Beatles, because I am extremely lazy today and hey why not. A while back, I purposely stopped listening to The Beatles for about a year just so I could rediscover them to hear how good the band really is. It’s hard to really get how amazing The Beatles were, when you hear so much of it all the time. But listen to this track, “Tomorrow Never Knows,” off Revolver, and tell me that drum part, and really all if it, couldn’t be released today, maybe as a Radiohead song.
That might be my favorite song of theirs. It’s hard to decide which songs to highlight here…because, you know. It’s The Beatles. Read the rest of this entry >>

Your Sunday Evening Vegetarian of EXTREMELY Awesome Awesomeness is the one, the only, the incomparable David effing Bowie. This man is brilliant. And you know that. I mean. Just listen to “Life on Mars.”
I’m pretty sure I can’t really explain to you, in words, how incredibly talented I think Bowie is. The fact that he could get so huge being so counter-cultural says something about his music. Read the rest of this entry >>

I wrote about Art Brut a while back, in which frontman Eddie Argos said he’s a sometimes-vegetarian, which is good enough for the purposes of the Sunday Vegetarian Post. Well, even if he does eat meat sometimes, Argos - and the rest of Art Brut and a dozen other bands - doesn’t like to see fashion companies use real fur for their clothing. As Argos says,
I don’t understand why anyone would wear fur. Everyone knows how animals are killed for their fur is brutal– it all comes down to vanity, which is pretty sad. [peta2 via Pitchfork]
And that’s where peta2 comes in with their petition to get Burberry to stop using fur. The clothing company (which, full disclosure, I really like but really can’t afford) still uses actual animal fur in their collections, even though synthetics are readily available. Other bands that have signed on are Jack Penate, Jamie T, The Maccabees, The Courteneers, The Rakes, Super Furry Animals, Los Campesinos!, Friendly Fires, Good Shoes, Hadouken!, Air Traffic, and The Wombats. And, yes, those are all British bands, as Burberry is a British brand. British band/British brand. I’d rewrite that confusing sentence, but I’m lazy, so I’ll pretend I meant it. Your Awesome Sunday Vegetarian of Awesomeicity this evening is Rivers Cuomo, frontman of Weezer, the band that told us, “If it’s too loud, turn it down.” Sage advice, friends. Weezer, now, by my count, has released three self-titled albums, which is only semi-confusing. The best video (possibly ever) came off of the first one, which is known as the Blue Album. You know it, you love it: it’s “Buddy Holly.”
The next record is called Pinkerton, and it took a while for people to find its genius. In it, Cuomo is a lot rawer, a lot angrier, and, really, a lot awesomer. There are so many good songs off this album, and though my favorite is “Falling for You,” I think we’ll show you the video for “El Scorcho,” because it’s one of the catchier songs, oh, ever. This Sunday evening’s super awesome vegetarian that is full of awesomeness is Fat Mike, lead signer of NOFX, your local long-standing punk band. Like any good punk band, NOFX sings songs about drinkin’, fightin’, and politicin’. And, of course, vegetarianism. Here’s the song “Clams Have Feelings Too,” which I still haven’t determined to be pro- or anti-meat.
NOFX have been around for quite a while, and about fifteen years ago, during the Clinton era, they wrote this little ditty called, “All Outta Angst,” about how the state of society was actually disheartening, because there was nothing really wrong. Seeing as they’ve released an album during the current administration called The War on Errorism, I have to think they’ve changed their minds. Read the rest of this entry >>
