The King of the World has bestowed quite a gift upon 11 of his subjects.
Avatar director James Cameron teamed with producer Jon Landau to purchase 11 Priuses for the film’s principle cast members, reports Cinema Blend.
With a starting sticker price of $22,800, the Prius is not a cheap gift, but Cameron can probably afford the $250,000 total.
For directing, producing, and writing the biggest film in box office history—Avatar earned a whopping $2.7 billion worldwide—Cameron reportedly pocketed $350 million.
The eco-friendly hybrid vehicles fit nicely into Avatar’s eco-friendly theme.
"I wanted to do a film that had a deeply embedded environmental message ... but do it in the form of a science fiction action adventure," said Cameron in a radio interview last year. "My feeling was if we have to go four light years away to another planet to appreciate what we have here on Earth, that's okay."
Not to take anything away from the thoughtful gift, but why didn't Cameron and Landau extend the green gesture beyond the main cast—to lesser actors and the crew? That would have been a heckuva green statement, giving hybrid cars to folks who otherwise might not be able to afford them.
