How Our Cell Phones Link Us to Congo’s Sexual Violence Epidemic

The ‘Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ star on the scourge of violence against women

My newest film, Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, opened over the holidays. The film, like the best-selling book by Stieg Larsson, follows, in often graphic detail, the twists and turns of an investigation to track down a serial killer who has committed unspeakable crimes against women—a theme that, as an actor and an activist, resonated immensely with me in 2011.

I was in the Democratic Republic of Congo on my son’s 18th birthday. It was the day I met Joseph, a former child soldier who was forcibly recruited in the midst of an unrelenting war that has engulfed eastern Congo for more than a decade. The militia that attacked his community then forced Joseph to fight alongside them.

Three days before I met Joseph he had arrived at a boys’ home and rehabilitation center filled with at least a hundred children with similarly gruesome stories, including being forced to watch as their mothers and sisters were raped—sometimes by multiple militiamen—and often killed. Joseph looks about 10 years old, so very young for having spent more than a year fighting in the bush. He told me all he wants is to find his mother and return home.

Exclusive: The Good Life, With Architect/Designer Gulla Jonsdottir

The Icelandic native avoids nothing and always craves chocolate.

Gulla Jonsdottir has left her mark far and wide, with architectural and design projects everywhere from Lebanon to Reykjavik. Last year Esquire named her look for Red O Restaurant in Los Angeles “Best Design of the Year.” The eco-minded Jonsdottir and head of her firm G + Design—who worked with Richard Meier’s team on the Getty Center and finessed the design for New York’s hip Double Seven Lounge—put her blueprints aside to talk to TakePart.

My favorite place in the world is… Rome in the winter and Bali in the fall, but there’s nothing like swimming in the Mediterranean sea in the summer.

If I could change the world, I would start with… Changing how people think. We need to appreciate life and our Earth and be grateful and respectful to be here.

My last random act of kindness was… Sharing a smile with a stranger and giving compliments to people no matter where they are situated—feels like good food for thought for sharing positivity.

My favorite green product is… The very chic charcoal product from Japan which purifies your water from the faucet. It’s called Binchotan, and it’s a beautiful charcoal branch that is placed in a glass bottle to absorb unwanted particles like bacteria and instead releases natural minerals.

It would be easier to be green if only… Green design and products were more aesthetically pleasing and less expensive so all my clients would go for them.

Right now I’m addicted to… Chocolate. Always.

Right now I’m avoiding… I don’t pay attention to avoiding things. Life in balance is beautiful.

My superhero power would be… Having a magical wand to make all people happy.

Our next President should focus on… Education, eco-friendly living and solid and well-developed friendship with other countries.

My eco rule of thumb is… To always recycle and don’t acquire unnecessary things. Sometimes reusing the existing is more eco than anything else.

My last eco faux pas was... Buying that convertible car.

Next on my life to-do list is…To spend more time with family and friends, master languages such as Italian, French and Spanish. I want to open design studios in four more parts of the world, take longer vacations and get a piano for my New York apartment. Oh, and spend more time painting and traveling to adventurous places—and appreciating every moment of life every day.

Exclusive: The Good Life, With Yogi Gurmukh

Is it any surprise that the Kundalini guru is obsessed with kindness?

If you can downward dog without a wince, you know the name Gurmukh. The ever-turbaned yogi and founder of the famed bicoastal Golden Bridge studio has a following that would make Mitt Romney envious. Gurmukh also devotes her time to helping orphanages in India, Tibet and Mexico. She took a deep breath and answered our questions with brevity:

My favorite place in the world is… Wherever I am.

If I could change the world, I would start with… Myself.

My last random act of kindness was… Hugging a student at Golden Bridge.

My favorite green product is… Green, chewy veggie-bones for my dogs.

It would be easier to be green if only… I committed 100 percent to it all the time, wherever I'm at in the world.

GurmukhRight now I’m addicted to… Kindness.

Right now I’m avoiding… Arguing.

My superhero power would be… To be unendingly energized.

Our next President should focus on… The power of kindness.

My eco rule of thumb is… Eating whole, organic, live, locally grown foods.

My last eco faux pas was… [silence]

Next on my life to-do list is… Passing no judgments on anyone or anything.

The Good Life is TakePart’s weekly probe into the mind of a fascinating person.

Mark Ruffalo: Don’t Frack Up New Jersey

Actor solicits anti-fracking support ahead of crucial November 21 vote.

Mark Ruffalo, the curly-haired prince of the anti-fracking crusade, is back at it, and this time he’s schlepping his message to the Garden State.

“Drilling for natural gas in the Delaware River Basin will mean threatening the water supply of 15.6 million people,” says Ruffalo in a new spot from Water Defense.

On November 21, the Delaware River Basin Commission will meet in Trenton, New Jersey, to decide the fracking fate for five percent of the U.S. population.Continue Reading »

Talk Sh*t With Matt Damon (VIDEO)

How the toilet has saved more lives than any other invention.

Matt Damon wants to talk shit with you.

Seriously. Matt Damon wants to talk about diarrhea. And toilets. And fecal matter.

No, 2007's Sexiest Man Alive hasn't suddenly regressed into an 11-year-old boy who likes bathroom humor.

Saturday is World Toilet Day, and the sad fact is that around the world, more people have a mobile phone than a toilet. That's not a laugh line for 4th grade boys. It's a serious public health problem.

The Good Life, With Songstress Priscilla Ahn

The indie musician chats about composting with worms and avoiding yoga classes.

Priscilla Ahn is the girl you want sitting next to you on a long flight. The singer-songwriter has a soulful and slyly skewed perspective on life, which is mirrored on her latest album, When You Grow Up (Blue Note Records). She’s toured with the likes of Willie Nelson, Amos Lee and Ray LaMontagne, and you can catch her live at Slim's in San Franciso on December 1 or at the El Rey in Los Angeles on December 2.

My favorite place in the world is… Kaua’i. I’ve been drawn to the island for many years for some reason, and then a year and half ago, I was married there. When I first stepped out of the airport and smelled the air...it felt so familiar, so nostalgic. Like I’d been there before. I dream of retiring there one day.

Exclusive Photos: Carrie Ann Inaba Helps Kids Heal Through Dance

With Drea’s Dream, the ‘Dancing With The Stars’ judge helps children with cancer through dance therapy.

Almost three years ago, Dancing With The Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba signed on as spokesperson for Dréa's Dream, a nonprofit foundation that raises funds and provides dance therapy to kids with special education needs and cancer. Since then, she has visited children in hospitals and spoken out about the wonders of dance as therapy. The cause honors the memory of Andréa Rizzo, a cancer survivor who was studying to be a dance therapist when she was killed by a drunk driver. Her mother, Susan Rizzo Vincent, heads up the organization. Says Inaba: "[Dréa] benefitted from movement therapy and wanted to give that gift back."

The Good Life, With Retta Sirleaf of ‘Parks and Recreation’

The comedic actress spills on hot tubs, forgiving bad drivers, and green-product packaging.

Nothing gets between Donna Meagle and her Mercedes SUV on the hit show Parks and Recreation. She’s got some of the best serrated one liners and deserves an Emmy for eye rolling too.

This week Sirleaf gave us a glimpse into her life as she typed away on the set of her show.

My favorite place in the world is… Rome, Italy. I’ve been a few times with friends for vacation, and I love it: the food, the sites, the ever-attentive boys. All of it is yummy.

If I could change the world, I would start with… Feeding hungry children. It’s heartbreaking to know there are innocents who go to bed hungry, wake up hungry and through no fault of their own have absolutely no means by which to get fed. Parents can deal with their own suffering, but to watch your child go hungry would be torture.

Exclusive: The Good Life, With Laurie David

The producer and author expounds on guerilla activism and her preference for glass Ball jars.

Laurie David wants to talk about supper. “Your family is whomever you are sitting down to dinner with,” says the eco-activist, whose book, The Family Dinner: Great Ways to Connect with Your Kids, One Meal at a Time, is a celebration of the oft-overlooked ritual. “It could be your kids or your friends.”

David—who produced An Inconvenient Truth and launched the Stop Global Warming College Tour with Sheryl Crow—is indefatigable when it comes to feeding people. On November 8, she cohosts a fundraiser in Los Angeles for Common Threads, an organization devoted to educating at-risk kids about nutrition. Chefs like Stefan Richter and Neal Fraser will be on hand serving bites. To buy a ticket and suport the cause, click here. David will hand you a napkin.
