I am so horrified by the story of the 15 year-old murder suspect accused of killing nine year-old Elizabeth Olten. The accused is an acquaintance of Elizabeth and has been charged with first-degree murder. Last week a judge ordered that the teen remain in juvenile custody as they decide if she will be tried in an adult court.
I don’t understand what drives anyone to murder another human being, especially what drives a kid to kill another kid! Here’s a brief video about this tragic story:
According to reports, Internet activity may help convict the acused teen. Apparently the suspect had a YouTube profile that listed her hobbies as “cutting” and “killing people”. Also on the page are a couple of disturbing homemade videos including one where the teen suspect is getting shocked by an electric fence, The suspects Twitter page (which has since been deleted) is also being examined as it included posts about “addiction” and “terrors.”
To me, the Twitter posts don’t scream “murderer” but the hobbies on her Youtube profile do seem extremely strange. Then again, aren’t lots of teens attracted to violence? Just look at the video games they play and the movies they watch, “killing people” in those medias are often seen as a cool thing (hello Grand Theft Auto?)
The other thing I am confused by is that authorities are protecting the name of the suspect, however her photo is plastered all over the Internet and TV.
I’m definitely going to keep an eye out for the verdict in this case, and I’m definitely going to do all I can to ensure my nieces (and my future kiddies) learn non-violent ways to deal with anger. Ugh, this story is just heartbreaking.
