I love the show House! Last night I sat down to Hulu to catch up with last week’s episode (there is an 8 day delay with House on Hulu) and was kind of blown away by the moral dilemma it showcased. The episode entitled “The Tyrant” features James Earl Jones as the brutal dictator of an African country that is brought into the hospital to be diagnosed after he throws up blood.
His condition causes the entire team to question whether or not they should even be saving him as his living means that many more will die.
It’s an interesting question and not an easy one to answer. Give a watch to the episode below and let us know what you think in the comments. Personally I think that as a doctor, it’s your responsibility to care for whomever comes your way–no matter how horrible the person might be. You can’t start discriminating, because if you do it can get pretty messy deciding who should and shouldn’t live.
Also, here’s hoping the House team tackles healthcare reform sometime soon!
