Director Louie Psihoyos traveled to Japan for the premiere of The Cove at the Tokyo International Film Festival. When he arrived at the Tokyo airport, he pledged to give the town of Taiji profits from any Japanese screening of the film — if the town of Taiji ends the hunt.
Psihoyos told the Associated Press: “Any of the money that is generated out of Japan, if they stop dolphin-hunting, will go to Taiji.” He continued, “Once the Japanese people see this film … I think they will shut down the cove. “This is not an animal-rights film. This is a people’s rights film for the Japanese people.” You can read more from the AP here.
Psihoyos also offered to show The Cove movie for free in Taiji, so that the townspeople and local authorities may personally judge the merits and accuracy of the film. “The Japanese town of Taiji is testing its residents’ mercury levels for the first time,” said Psihoyos, who congratulated their belated conscientiousness. The Cove has internationally publicized the toxic mercury levels in dolphin meat being sold in Taiji and across Japan, often mislabeled whale meat, in a global attempt to awaken the Japanese to a dire public health threat that the local media are reluctant to investigate or report.
The reviews of The Cove screening are still coming in but among the first is from David Corbin at Collider. He writes, “I believe that The Cove and, to a lesser extent, Oceans, are movies that force us to reconsider the power of the individual and the meaning of personal responsibility. They challenge us to make a difference, to be the difference. Needless to say, I am looking forward to seeing the reaction to the public screening later this week.”
And so are we! Here are 5 things you can to right now to help end the dolphin hunt in Japan.
