National Geographic and Fox Team to Create New Nature Channel Posted by Andy Kondrat on October 16, 2009 at 11:54 am

In news that proves that there is still something right and good and decent in the world, it was announced yesterday that Fox and National Geographic will be debuting a brand new channel early next year, called Nat Geo Wild, which will air nature programs around the clock. And to make room for it on the dial, it is booting Fox Reality Channel off the air. So, let’s do the math. Plus one nature show channel and minus one reality show channel equals best news of the day. Says the New York Times:

Wildlife coverage has always been among the most popular offerings of National Geographic in its magazine and on television, and the company already has a substantial library of natural history programs. [general manager and executive vice president of the National Geographic Channel Steven] Schiffman said the new channel would have access to that library but added that it had already commissioned a wide range of original programs.

Included in that list of original programming is “a program called ‘Rebel Monkeys’ about rambunctious monkeys in India.” Oh my God yes.

As you might be able to tell, I am so very amped about this news. No, I don’t take any drugs; I just really really like watching shows about nature. I own all the Blue Planet and Planet Earth DVDs, and can watch them again and again and again. So getting an entire channel of this stuff? And kicking a reality show channel off the air? Double - nay - quadruple win. I mean: look at this. Crocodile vs. Wildebeest. How could you not want to watch this 97 hours a day?
