Michelle Obama is without a doubt one of my gardening heroes, and her upcoming appearance on the premiere of Sesame Street’s 40th season giving gardening advice to kids confirms her lauded status. Coincidentally, I volunteered this morning at an elementary school garden and was thrilled, yet not shocked, to see how excited the kids were about growing their own vegetables.
Children’s innate curiosity and inclination to get their hands dirty makes them naturals for gardening. And with the guidance and encouragement of the countless and tireless teachers, gardeners, farmers, and other role models like Michelle, they can learn so much about the importance of healthy eating habits, caring for the environment, and a multitude of other life lessons.
Check out the video of Michelle on Sesame Street below and use the action links below to support Sesame Street and help start a classroom garden. Also be sure to check out Time Magazine’s hilarious prediction of Obam-antagonists’ responses to Michelle’s “radical/Marxist/fascist message“, as well as Michelle’s Sesame Street public service announcement.
