NYFF MAIN SLATE

Antichrist - Lars von Trier, 2009, Denmark, 109m

Screens: 10/2/09 9:00pm and 10/3/09 1:00pm

Yesterday I got to see one of my most anticipated movies of the year, Lars von Trier’s Antichrist. I still have a lot to think about on the film but overall I couldn’t have been more pleased with the experience, which also included a Skype press conference with Lars himself (he doesn’t take airplanes and therefore has never been to the US).  The movie has been getting a lot of press about the more scandalous elements of the film, including graphic penetration shots, genital mutilation and talking foxes but putting that aside I think von Trier has created a pretty smart, somewhat muddled but super entertaining film.

I’ll be writing a more comprehensive piece on the film and the press conference this weekend but for now I wanted to leave you with some pretty great (and super entertaining) quotes from the man himself:

“If you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere” - Said after a short explanation of his never-ending depression.

“You didn’t notice any walkouts? Then I have failed.” - He kids, he kids (I think).

“I think that Psycho is a classic, but not because it was scary.” - Psycho is my favorite movie!!!

“I was very, very taken by Twin Peaks. I thought that was a fantastic piece of whatever it was.” - On Antichrist’s influences

“I don’t know if I learned anything or if I hated women more than I did before.  I like to be with women.” - On his portrayal of women
