The latest issue of The Nation features incredible articles from many of TakePart’s favorite food writers, and I strongly urge you to pick up a copy or read it online. Featuring coverage from Alice Waters, Michael Pollan, Anna Lappé, Raj Patel and others, the issue offers fresh perspectives on some of our favorite topics, including ending world hunger, ecologically-sound farming, and farmers markets, as well as redefining terms often thrown around in discussions of sustainability, such as ‘food deserts‘, and school lunch reform.
I don’t want to give away too much because you should really go read the whole issue, but I wanted to highlight a few great excerpts:
Dan Barber, chef of the sustainable Blue Hill, on the importance of learning to cook and diversifying our palate:
Not only do we eat too much meat, we also eat too much of the wrong parts. We don’t know where our meat comes from, we don’t know what the animal we’re eating ate, and we sure don’t know how to get behind the stove and take control of what we put in our mouths.
Grace Lee Boggs, Detriot’s Quiet Food Revolution (also happening elsewhere in Michigan) and the benefits of community gardens and self-reliance:
It reduces neighborhood blight, reconnects children and adults, and provides a community base for economic development.
There’s plenty more to check out, too, including the important connection between food safety and health care reform. And use the action link below to find out how you can start a community garden.
