Mozilla Service Week: The Web Can Make A Difference Posted by Danny Jensen on September 11, 2009 at 3:12 pm

picture-53As we commemorate the eighth anniversary of the September 11th attacks, now recognized as a National Day of Service and Remembrance, we’ve come to understand that a powerful way to honor those who lost their lives, were injured and stepped up to help that day, is by volunteering to help our communities and our country.  It is in that spirit that the Mozilla Service Week, which begins on September 14, offers us a chance to use the Internet to make the world and the Web a better place for everyone.

Mozilla is asking people to volunteer whatever skills and time they have to offer, whether it’s writing, designing, programing or just general technical know-how, to assist local organizations and those who need help.  Here are just some examples of how you could help:

  • Teach senior citizens how to use the Web.
  • Show a non-profit how to use social networking to grow its base of supporters.
  • Help install a wireless network at a school.
  • Create Web how-to materials for a library’s computer cluster.
  • Refurbish hardware for a local computer center.
  • Update a non-profit organization’s website.
  • Teach the values of the open Web to other public benefit organizations.

You may be familiar with Mozilla because of their awesome open source community-powered web browser Firefox, but they also do remarkable work to help make the Internet accessible to everyone, including Universal Access to help those with disabilities.

So whether you or your organization are in need of assistance or you have skills and time to offer those in need, the Mozilla Service Week is a wonderful way to harness the power of the Internet to build a brighter future.
