Last week on HBO I saw the documentary Which Way Home which offers a heartbreaking look at Latin American migrants (mostly children) trying to get to the United States. Gina blogged about the movie when it first played at the Tribeca Film Festival, but now that it’s available to view on HBO I wanted to mention it again. I really encourage you to see it. I was so rattled after seeing this movie. I just kept thinking, Why are some people born in a country with automatic access to a good education, while others are born in areas that offer little to no opportunity for self-improvement and success? As I heard one boy in the film explain that he wanted to get to the US to make enough money to afford a tutor, I felt a deep pang in my heart. I remember as a kid, my goal in high school was to breeze through as easily as I could while getting average grades. I didn’t love school. I didn’t appreciate school. When my father offered to get me a tutor, I refused. Going to the mall and hanging out with my friends was more important to me. I now realize how lucky I was to even have the education I did, and how unfortunate it is that I didn’t appreciate it at the time. Meanwhile, across the border, kids are thirsty for a sip of the schooling I had handed to me. It’s just not fair.
