Parents across the country are fed up with unhealthy school lunches served daily to their kids, and rather than stand by while homemade lunches get ditched for readily available junk food, many moms and dads are rallying together to ensure that schools provide healthy options in the cafeteria. (Some parents are even starting before the kids attend school.)
Reforming school lunches sounds like a great idea, but not every parent has the time or resources to overhaul a deeply entrenched and convoluted cafeteria supply chain, which is why award-winning filmmaker and mom, Amy Kalafka, along with Dr. Susan P. Rubin, created the documentary Two Angry Moms to educate parents on how they can take an active role in the healthy school food movement. The film is available for anyone wanting to host a screening, and the filmmakers have provided tremendous educational resources to help bring about change in your community. Check out the trailer after the jump.
The momentum for improving school lunches is building, and as childhood obesity levels continue to rise, the time for change couldn’t come sooner. I’m encouraged by the Obama’s commitment to bringing healthy and local food into schools, and with the combined efforts of amazing grassroots campaigns, including Two Angry Moms and Alice Waters’ Edible Schoolyards, I believe we can turn around the sorry state of school lunches.

Join the 16,000+ people on Slow Food USA’s petition for REAL FOOD in schools - and find an Eat-In to attend in your area @ http://www.slowfoodusa.org/index.php/campaign/time_for_lunch/
Great idea! I wrote about the Eat-In events last week: http://www.takepart.com/blog/2009/08/21/attend-slow-foods-labor-day-eat-in-support-real-food-in-schools/
Sounds like the change is starting to sweep the country.
Feeding our children unhealthy food makes for unhealthy minds that cannot concentrate on learning. Our children and what they put in their bodies are our future.
I agree, thank you for your comment!
What’s not mentioned in this article is BETTER SCHOOL FOOD, the non-profit group I started that supports those advocating for a better food environment. Visit http://www.betterschoolfood.org to learn more about the movement!
