It’s official! Same-sex couples can now get legally married in Vermont. Yay! The state is one of five to allow same-sex marriage joining Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Iowa. Vermont invented civil unions in 2000 after a same-sex couple challenged the inequality of state marriage laws.
And to celebrate Vermont’s new marriage rights, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream renamed “Chubby Hubby” to “Hubby Hubby” for the month of September. In partnership with the organization Freedom to Marry, Ben & Jerry’s aims to raise awareness of the importance of marriage equality and, to show its support, will serve “Hubby Hubby” sundaes in Vermont Scoop Shops all month.
