It’s sad that former drug addict DJ Am survived a horrific plane crash, and then died from a drug overdose. After being sober for eleven years, DJ AM apparently developed a dependency on Xanax and a number of other anti-anxiety drugs after surviving that plane crash. Ironically, DJ AM (whose real name was Adam Goldstein) was suppose to star in an MTV special in October called “Gone Too Far,” in which he held interventions for addicts. In this video DJ AM discusses the show:
It seems as though DJ AM really did want to help others with drug problems but unfortunately pain meds rekindled his addiction to drugs. Addiction specialist Dr. Drew Pinsky told the AP that taking pain medications “very slowly and subtly reawakens addiction. “I’m not saying it was inappropriately prescribed, I’m saying he didn’t know the risks.”

Unfortunately, many addicts find that a desire to quit is often not enough. It’s the role of practitioners, including psychiatrists, psychologists, and the likes, to become proficient in, and develop additional, methods to help addicts in need of help.
