The Australian town of Broome Shire has decided to end its sister-city relationship with Taiji, Japan due to the ongoing dolphin slaughter that takes place in the Japanese town. By severing ties to Taiji, Broome Shire is sending an important and resounding message to the world that the international community must stand together to bring an end to the government-sanctioned killings. Sea Shepherd Conservation Society Australian director Jeff Hansen applauded the town’s bold stance, saying:
This could just be the catalyst that shuts this unjustified, barbaric and inhumane practice down for good.
If you haven’t yet seen The Cove, which documents the horrific slaughter, I strongly urge you to go see it in theaters and find out what’s happening in the heavily-guarded cove of Taiji, Japan. While the town council of Broome Shire apparently still wants to pursue alternative economic opportunities with Taiji, I’m hoping that they maintain their resolve and help put an end to the practice.
