Cell phones are not usually known for having “green” features, but Samsung recently announced a new solar powered phone and one that is partially biodegradable. I can’t say I plan on giving up my iPhone anytime soon, but the two new options give me hope that the industry could be shifting towards more environmentally friendly design.
Before you get ready to start tossing Samsung’s “Reclaim” phone into the compost bin, you should know that the phone is actually only 40 percent corn-based plastic, and the remaining 60 percent is stantard plastic. And while the phone still contains the heavy metals and battery that make other cell phones toxic for the planet, it’s a step in the right direction. By harnessing the power of the sun, Samsung’s E11077 reduces the energy demands of conventional phones, not to mention the hassle of forgetting your charger or losing power when you’re out and about. Â
Consumer electronics create an enormous amount of waste both in their creation and disposal, and companies need to continue to find ways to reduce the pollution. Hopefully Samsung will continue to explore green features and inspire other companies to do the same. You can also do your part by recycling your old phone.
