Calling Volunteers: Help Stage a Vietnam/Nixon Era Rally Posted by TakePart on August 13, 2009 at 1:23 pm

cmi_022On Saturday, August 29th, a short film entitled The Activist needs your help in staging a rally from the Vietnam/Nixon era (see film synopsis below).

In order to make it as authentic as possible, come out ready to rally in your best vintage 1960s attire. The rally will be shot on the video of its time–that is, 16mm black & white film–and will include a full lunch and snacks for your help, but more importantly, it should be an opportunity to be a part of a powerful film that will inspire today’s generation as a call to action.

Location and costume details are below. Feel free to call Phil Montgomery (contact info below) anytime to discuss in more detail. If you can make it, please RSVP with your e-mail and phone number so Phil can contact you with more details as the date nears. Your support and participation would be invaluable to this film and, to show just how much, details on the wrap party will be coming shortly to those who can attend!

Film Synopsis:

The Activist tells the story of a man in his 50s who is a jaded and cynical corporate lawyer. As he reflects on how he got to where he is in life, the film flashes back to a speech he gave in 1970 in front of an anti-war rally, a week after the Kent State Massacre. This is the scene that requires as many people as possible to make it look authentic. The film cuts back and forth from the young man at the rally to the older version of the man today and it quickly becomes apparent that his 1970 speech is speaking to his 50-year-old self. At the end of the film–in modern day–he finds a note that was given to him during the rally that calls him to action.

COSTUME DETAILS:

Guys Costume:

Eyewear: Nothing modern. Thick rimmed glasses are always good.

Shirts: Plain collard shirts, thin neck ties, polo shirts, t-shirts, or turtle necks - any color, stripes are fine, NO LOGOS, BRANDS, or IMAGES.

Pants: Tighter jeans, khakis, corduroys

Shoes: Anything that’s not a tennis shoe. No logos, swooshes, or stripes.

Hair: Bushy, long hair is more for the hippy style. Parted to the side is good for a more academic look. NO HAIR PRODUCT OR OVERSTYLING.

Jackets from the era are also good. A few men in full suit and tie that look like they could be from 60s are also encouraged (suits were
thinner and more form fitting back then–thick brimmed glasses and thin neck ties).

Women’s Costume:

Eyewear: Nothing modern. Thick rimmed glasses are always good.

Shirts: Light sweaters, loose fitting blouses, any garments with 1960s style, patterns, turtle necks, boat-neck tops of any color, NO LOGOS, BRANDS or IMAGES

Pants/Skirts: High-waist jeans, sailor cut pants, khakis, corduroys, or peasant skirts and modest dresses.

Shoes: Mary-Janes or plain slip-ons, or regular black shoes –nothing too modern. No heels, logos, swooshes, or stripes.

Hair: Air Dry. Natural. NO PRODUCT.

Make-Up: Natural, no eye-shadow–the less the better.

Overall Costumes:

We will also bring some items in case what you bring might look out of place. Keep in mind this is an academic activist rally, not Woodstock , however a moderate level of “hippy” influence in the costumes would be good as well.
