The majority of sports events take place on a green field, so I find it appropriately fitting that an increasing number of professional teams, stadiums and related organizations are working to lower their carbon footprint by committing to environmental initiatives. As an environmentally conscious fan (Hello, Green Monster!), I’m thrilled to hear the good news, knowing what a huge impact these environmental initiatives could have, and the potential they hold for shifting so many people’s mindsets towards protecting the planet.
With the help (and in some cases pressure) of organizations such as the NRDC, venues are looking for ways to reduce the high energy demands and enormous waste generated by sporting events. The list of green improvements that can be made is huge, but certainly achievable: powering events with renewable energy, using recycled, recyclable and compostable materials for food and drinks, improving waste management, reducing water and chemical usage, greening team travel, and encouraging public transportation.
So, when you go to see your favorite teams this summer and in the months to follow, keep an eye out for places where they could reduce their environmental impact, and don’t be afraid to speak up. You’re a sports fan after all, you should be used to letting officials know how you feel.

The Natural Resources Defence Council website http://www.greensports.org recommends the use of the “club website to coordinate carpooling”. http://www.viamerge.com is a ridesharing application specialized for events that would make this a snap for fans.
Excellent resources Rose, thank you!!
