Sad news from LA - the Los Angeles County Museum of Art has decided to close down its weekend film program. For years the museum has been playing repertory and foreign films on the weekends but on Tuesday the announced that the program was losing their audience and money.
Given the history of the LACMA this is kind of heartbreaking:
“Before there were local film festivals nearly every week and mass merchants such as Target stocking art-house hits like “A Room With a View” and “Gosford Park” on their DVD shelves, LACMA’s series was one of the few places area movie lovers could find Hollywood classics and foreign-language standouts. Screenings often included appearances by and conversations with distinguished filmmakers and legendary actors and actresses.”
As a devoted movie-goer news like this causes me to worry about art house and rep theaters across the country.
If you live in a city with a place where art house and old films screen be sure to go every once in awhile. Not only will you most likely see a film that you’ll like but you’ll aslo be preserving a very important part of our culture.
