Skateistan is a non-profit skateboarding school in Kabul that teaches children in Afghanistan to reach beyond cultural, socioeconomic and gender boundaries as they learn to trust each other, themselves and pick up some sweet moves along the way. Earlier this spring Giulia wrote about this amazing program, founded by a few Australian skateboarders, and this coming month the organization will complete construction of a $1 million indoor skate park funded by local and international donations, where in addition to learning to skate, Afghan kids will also have the opportunity to take English and computer classes.
In a country where girls are rarely allowed to interact with boys, let alone participate in any athletic activities, Skateistan is providing such a rare and vital opportunity for them and has met with surpisingly little resistance.  Who ever thought a skateboard could be such an amazing vehicle for social change? Check out Skateistan’s latest video to learn more and use the action link below to find out how you can help support the program:
