I’ve never heard of e-cigarettes before, but apparently the battery-powered electronic devices, which produce a vapor of nicotine, flavorings and other chemicals, have been shown to contain cancer-causing ingredients and other toxins.  Are we really surprised to learn that a product that fills your lung with compounds found in anti-freeze and nicotine, is hazardous to your health, highly addictive, and encourages the use of conventional cigarettes?  I’m glad the FDA is stepping up to express their concerns over the safety of e-cigarrettes, but I’m amazed the motorized cancer-sticks got this far.  Oh, yeah and they’re manufactured in China, which hasn’t had the greatest track record for safe products lately.

Shipments of the e-cigarettes are currently being siezed at the border as they are considered a drug and a device and fall under FDA jurisdiciton, but one of the manufacturers, Smoking Everywhere (really?!) claims the FDA overstepped their legal bounds.  Prepare for an e-rumble.  The companies argue that the devices are safe (cough, cough) and not marketed towards children and young people, despite the fact that they’re sold in shopping malls and come in delicious flavors like chocolate, mint and bubblegum.  E-cigarettes are clearly another ridiculous ploy to get people hooked early in life and keep them that way until debilitating health issues require a new generation to fill their place.

Another high handed mis-representation of the facts. If I choose to smoke, why should you care if it is a cigarette or e-cigarette? With the e-cigarette people can reduce the number of chemicals they intake from over 2000 to just 4 or 5, control what level of nicotine they are inhaling and eliminate the dangers of secondhand smoke. This country was founded on freedom, let smokers exercise some.
