Happy Belated Con Air Day! Posted by Andy Kondrat on July 16, 2009 at 1:40 pm

Around here at TakePart, we like to honor days that are very important to history. But unfortunately, sometimes we miss one, and have to do a belated post to make up for our lapse. Yes, that’s right. All you astute readers out there probably have already realized that on Tuesday, July 14, we forgot to honor Con Air Day, the day in which we remember what a totally awesome movie Con Air is. Why July 14?

Yes, Con Air takes place on July 14. How this is not already a national holiday, I simply cannot say. It baffles the mind, and the soul.

This is probably something one ought not to admit, but I have a rule concerning two movies, and the rule is this: if it’s on TV, and I notice that it’s on, I will watch the entire thing. No exceptions. Sure, there are movies like Happy Gilmore that I’ll probably watch a few minutes of if I see it on USA, but there are two movies that demand I watch them all the way through. The first, obviously, is The Rock. The second is Con Air. This makes for a long day on those occasions TNT decides to run them back-to-back.

Yes, I know those are both Nicholas Cage movies. Trust me, I didn’t do this on purpose. Now, my friend Matt, who also lives and dies by these two films, claims he likes Con Air better than The Rock, and the more I watch the former (yes, I did absolutely say “the more I watch” in reference to Con Air), the more I tend to agree with him. For pure fun, it really goes over the top. The Rock tries to make you care about Nick Cage. Con Air gives him a ridiculous drawl and lines like, “Why couldn’t you put the bunny back in the box?” Which, of course, is delivered to a dude he’s already killed. Win. Oh yeah, and the whole climax in Vegas thing. So rad.

So, our apologies for missing this most terribly important of holidays, but put it in your calendar, for eternity, that July 14, from here on out, is Con Air Day. Celebrate with loved ones.

Thank you for this tribute to two amazing movies.

The Rock was the first movie I ever bought for myself. I turned on my TV one day, and a scene from The Rock was playing. After 45 seconds I turned my TV off, and pledged that I would not turn it on again until I owned The Rock and could watch it in its entirety. I bought the movie that day.

That being said, there aren’t many movies that feature “a bunch of idiots dancing on a plane to a song made famous by a band that died in a plane crash.” It’s those little touches that count.
