As I sit here blogging in my pajamas unsure of what to wear today, I read that several Sudanese women have been flogged earlier this month for wearing trousers! Unbelievable.
The women were punished for dressing “indecently”, according to local journalist Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein,who was also arrested. Lubna says she is facing 40 lashes after being arrested for wearing pants at a restaurant in the capital, Khartoum.
Non-Muslims are not supposed to be subject to Islamic law, even in Khartoum and other parts of the mainly Muslim north. Yet even though many of those caught wearing trousers were from the mainly Christian they are still facing this harsh penalty. Today a senior Sudanese politician called for an enquiry into this incident.
This is just a tiny sampling of how unfairly women in Sudan are treated.
