Somewhere James Bond is untagging himself.
Sir John Sawers, the newly appointed head of the MI6, had his cover blown after highly personal information was posted on his wife Shelley’s Facebook page. Unaware of the national security breach that she was setting off, Shelley apparently left her profile open to the more than 20 million Facebook users in the London area network with little privacy protection.
Her page included information about John’s work, their home and vacation destinations as well as the names of some very high profile friends and acquaintances, linking the British intelligence chief with celebrities and politicians. On the day Sawers was appointed head of the Secret Intelligence Service, Shelley congratulated her husband with an update using the codename “C.”
Immediately after the British intelligence agency was informed about the Facebook page, Shelley’s profile was removed, suggesting that the MI6 had not been aware of the leaked information. British officials are currently evaluating the damage that the information leak might have had on the integrity of its international spy programs. A number of UK politicians have called for Sawers’ removal from the top intelligence post because they believe the leaked information leaves the agency open to blackmail.
