Despite recent tussles with Beijing, internet search giant Google China is expected to post massive second-quarter gains this year, increasing revenue by nearly 25 percent over last quarter.
In June, Beijing threatened to pull the plug on Google’s Chinese operations for allowing internet users access to strictly prohibited pornography websites. After being completely blocked by internet censors a few times over the past month, however, Google was able to smooth over relations with Beijing, agreeing to keep a closer eye on adult content that could be “harmful to children.” China also blocked the Google-owned YouTube video site last month in anticipation of the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests.
Google is most likely riding a wave of new web traffic generated by the April launch of its internet music service which brought in a reported 22.4 million visitors during its first month. Google is hopeful that its new music component will chip away at first-place search engine Baidu’s share of the rapidly growing Chinese web market.
