I should first point out that this a remake of a Susanne Bier film by the same name. Bier is a Danish director known for making gritty dogme films and sweeping family stories.
That being said I can’t help but wonder how Jim Sheridan (a director I love BTW) will handle the darker parts of the story.
The trailer below (which does have spoilers) suggests two things to me: 1) that this version will be a lot more Hollywood and 2) Tobey Maguire might just save the movie.
Honestly I almost turned the trailer off halfway through. It was just to pretty and not bleak enough to stand up to Bier’s version. But when Tobey Maguire enters the scenario it actually looks like the film starts to venture into that darker territory. Although I have to wonder if Maguire will be able to go as dark as Ulrich Thomsen, one of my favorite actors and Danes.
