NYC Foodprint Alliance: Eating Local and Fighting Climate Change Posted by Danny Jensen on June 30, 2009 at 8:10 pm

A trailblazing resolution was introduced today to New York’s City Council aimed at improving access to local, just, and sustainably produced food in New York and decreasing the the city’s ecological “foodprint.” If you’re in NYC tomorrow, head down to City Hall at 11am and join Anna Lappé, Just Food, Council member Bill de Blasio, Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer, and other members of the NYC Foodprint Alliance to show your support of this amazing initiative.  The resolution would incorporate the issue of sustainable food into the City’s PlaNYC, which aims to reduce the City’s greenhouse gas emissions 30% by 2030 (it seems they left on the enormous impact of food).

The Big Apple feeds over 8 million people and by rethinking the production, processing, packaging, shipping, storage and disposal of food, the city could greatly reduce it’s contribution to greenhouse gases and climate change, while simultaneously providing greater access to local, healthy foods, particularly in underserved communities.  People often question if such an enormous city could sustainably feed itself, but I’m confident that with the help of people like Anna and the folks at Just Food, an initiative like this could make that reach that goal.

Since I’m on the opposite coast, I look forward to hearing about the press conference, so if you can make it let us know how it went!

Here are the details:
When: Wednesday, July 1, 11:00 AM
Where: City Hall Steps
Who: Councilmember Bill de Blasio, Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer, members of the NYC Foodprint Alliance, other elected officials and over one hundred activists
