Swine Flu Resistant to Meds Posted by Giulia Rozzi on June 29, 2009 at 10:48 pm

222-swine-fluRemember swine flu? It was all the rage weeks ago, before the trifecta of celebrity deaths ( actually four-fecta, did you know infomercial king Billy Mays died yesterday).

In case you’ve been having flu news withdrawl here’s some scary new info-experts report that a case of swine flu has been discovered that is resistant to tamiflu (the main drug being used to fight the pandemic). Apparently a patient with H1N1 influenza in Denmark showed resistance to tamiflu. Roche Holding AG (the company that made the medicine) representative David Reddy said this was not unexpected given that common seasonal flu could do the same.

This news come as the Department of Health announces that the number of sine flu cases in the UK increased by 1,604 since Friday, making the current total 5,937. Yikes!

Don’t freak out yet, apparently another antiviral drug, zanamivir or Relenza, made by GlaxoSmithKline, is also effective against swine flu.

If you’re like me and still confused by what swine flu is and how to avoid it, here’s the swine scoop.
