Opening today is a film you should see, one that could not have arrived in a more timely manner. The picture is called The Stoning Of Soraya M and comes from acclaimed director Cyrus Nowrasteh. Based on a true story, it focuses on a French-Iranian journalist traveling through Iran who encounters the tale of Soraya Marnò, a woman wrongfully accused of adultery and put to death by stoning in her small, mountainous village by decree of Sharia law.
Yes, I just gave away the ending, but the reason to see the film is that it elaborates on the immense hypocrisy, corruption, and inhumanity that run rampant in the theocratic rule that governs the Iranian people. This is the exact system, the exact rule that we are seeing Iranian society revolt against today following the recent contested election.
The picture pulls at all the intended heartstrings and ever-so-slightly stands on its soapbox, not hammering its message too hard but getting a bit heavy handed when the stoning lasts far longer than it should. (One of the producers of this film is the same name behind the The Passion Of The Christ, which had a very similar bloodied ending. I had actually commented to a friend that the ending reminded me of The Passion and was not surprised when I discovered the connection.)
The acting is strong on the whole, though at times it seems to run the risk of brushing what some might call “on the nose.” Though the director’s hand never feels as sure as the film is craving, the photography certainly elevates the small story’s cinematic qualities.
To some extent, this would be great fodder for a high-end cable release. That said, theatrical viewing is highly recommended as there are some strong performances. Seeing this film with current events in mind is certainly worthwhile–a conversation starter at the least, a call to action at most (and what else could a filmmaker ask for than inspiring people to bring change to the world?).
