I am still in a weird mood about the death of Michael Jackson. I mean, I know we all have to go sometime but Michael Jackson was the biggest icon of my generation, I dunno it just feels weird.
It’s pretty crazy to see how people are reacting to the news. While driving through Harlem I went past the Apollo Theatre (crappy cell pic above) where people are dancing to his music and celebrating his life. Meanwhile, some of my Facebook “friends” are using MJ’s death as an opportunity to use their status update boxes to share tacky Michael Jackson jokes. I know the guy led a controversial life, but please, let him go in peace. Whether you loved him (seriously who didn’t at one time or another) or hated him (how can you hate the silver glove?!), we can all agree that the death of Michael Jackson is one of the most talked about deaths of our lifetime.
Not only did MJ’s death affect peoples emotions, but it also affected technology. CNN reports that Michael Jacksons death almost broke down the Internet causing what may be the biggest mobile event in history. Between approximately 2:40 p.m. PDT and 3:15 p.m. PDT today, some Google News users experienced difficulty accessing search results for queries related to Michael Jackson and Google News users complained that the service was inaccessible for a time. At its peak, Google Trends rated the Jackson story as “volcanic.” Twitter crashed. Wikipedia had close to 500 edits made to Jackson’s entry in less than 24 hours and by 3:15pm PDT, Wikipedia was “temporarily overloaded.” TMZ (which broke the story) had several outages. The LA Times (which confirmed the story) suffered outages. And AOL’s instant messenger service was down for approximately 40 minutes this afternoon.
