Jerri Nielsen lost her battle with cancer yesterday at age 57. Nielsen was an amazing woman. This emergency room physician from Ohio discovered a lump in her breast in March 1999 while working for a year at the South Pole’s scientific station. Having no other medical professional to rely upon, Nielsen treated her own breast cancer and performed her own biopsy using ice, a local anesthetic and the help of a resident welder before being evacuated in a daring rescue.
