HBO is premiering an impeccably-timed documentary tomorrow titled Be Like Others.
The doc follows the plight of a group in Iran that isn’t getting much press amidst the fallout of the election: the nation’s transgendered. According to the film’s listing, a group of transsexuals in their twenties face persecution for homosexual behavior (illegal in Iran), but not for seeking sex-change operations. The film’s liner notes explain that a religious edict, or fatwa, issued two decades ago by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomeini decreed such procedures legal for “diagnosed transsexuals.”
This is the third of three docs that HBO is broadcasting this month, among them the fantastic The Queen And I, which played at Sundance this year and is screening at the Los Angeles Film Festival currently.
Be Like Others plays on HBO this Wednesday, June 24 at 8 pm.
