We can all rest easy now that Sarah Palin has accepted David Letterman’s second apology over monologue remarks he made about her daughter(s?). The Alaska Governor issued a statement saying that the joke, where Letterman said Palin’s daughter was “knocked up by Alex Rodriguez” at a New York Yankees game, was “beyond flawed” and “really, in and of itself can’t be defended” , then went on to accept Letterman’s apology (his second, the first was reported on here by Gina), “on behalf of all young women, like my daughters, who hope men who ‘joke’ about public displays of sexual exploitation of girls will soon evolve.”
I don’t say this often, probably because it doesn’t happen often, but Palin is absolutely right - about the joke being indefensible and beyond flawed. But the outrage that she expresses over incidents like this might ring a little more true if they didn’t happen so often. Earlier this month Palin was outraged that she wasn’t invited to speak at a GOP event in DC. During last year’s Presidential campaign she was outraged over an outrageous claim of her own that Barack Obama was “palling around with terrorists”. During the same campaign she was outraged about a specious connection she made to Obama’s “lipstick on a pig” comment. I’m sure there are a number of examples that I’ve been able to block out I am forgetting.
It would be nice if Governor Palin could find a way to stay in the public eye while actually doing something of value for her constituency in Alaska. The way to further one’s political ambitions would ideally be served by politicians doing what they were elected to do, not by engaging in endless tabloid spats. I can understand that Governor Palin is not entirely to blame here. The media obviously eats her up and has ever since she was named Vice Presidential nominee for John McCain last year. But she certainly seems to revel in the attention from the perspective of a casual viewer.
