Four former detainees of the infamous Guantanamo Bay prison camp have been released in Bermuda. The four were amongst the 17 Chinese Uighur Muslim detainees which had previously been reported as being on the way to the Pacific island nation of Palau, but obviously events are quickly changing for this wrongfully imprisoned group. The government is currently arranging for the remaining 13 Uighur detainees to be sent to Palau. The four Uighurs now in Bermuda will be taking part in the Bermudian guest worker program.
I have traveled to Bermuda several times and, as you can see in the photo, it is absolutely beautiful. This arrangement with the Bermudian Government (which the US Justice Department thanked in a statement released this morning) will provide the Uigher detainees with employment in a gorgeous new homeland, away from the threat of more detainment and even torture in their native China, which has a dubious history in dealing with members of its Muslim Uighur minority suspected of separatist activities. Plus, with Bermuda being an island nation 700 miles off the coast of the Carolinas, opportunistic US politicians won’t be able to use the situation to exploit sensitive American fears over “terrorists”, as they already have at the prospect of Gitmo detainees being brought into American prisons, in order to drum up cheap votes in the next election. LINKS:

I think this is progress indeed. I mean, who wouldn’t want to be in Bermuda, right? OF course, someone will always criticize but this is a necessary step forward to closing Gitmo altogether.
