Earth 2100, a special program airing tonight on ABC, imagines the devastating future that could await our planet if we don’t take drastic steps to curb climate change and protect the earth’s finite resources. The startling predictions, based on scientific studies and interviews with a wide range of experts, are hauntingly depicted with beautiful graphic novel illustrations. The worst-case, but not unfathomable, scenario is recounted by the fictional character Lucy from the year 2100, as she looks back on the destruction seen over the course of her life, beginning on June 2nd, 2009.
As terrifying as imagining the collapse of civilization can be, the show seems to offer a sober and thoughtful warning, which will hopefully help motivate people to take action to avoid the potential disasters. I’ve seen and read a number of other doomsday scenarios, and while this feature is certainly ominous, it looks to be well researched, and I’m hoping it will offer some guidance to avert the terrible outcome, and not simply freak people out.
So, tune in tonight to watch Earth 2100, and let me know what you think of the show in the comments section below. You can watch a preview below, and be sure to find out what you can do to help solve the climate crisis in the action section below.
