I would like to welcome New Hampshire to the stage, please….The gay marriage bill in New Hampshire has passed! Governor John Lynch signed the bill into existence at approximately 5:20 p.m., bringing traditionally conservative New Hampshire into the pool of six states that now permit same-sex marriage. The decision did not go unnoticed: gay marriage supporters blasted “Walking on Sunshine” out of a loudspeaker outside of the New Hampshire Statehouse, saluting the decisions of lawmakers and celebrating their victory.
As per usual, opponents voiced their intent to appeal the decision in the future, many of whom resist on grounds of preserving the sanctity of marriage. Haven’t we learned from history? Separate is not equal. As Evan Wolfson of Freedom to Marry has said:Â “Marriage in the United States is a civil union; but a civil union, as it has come to be called, is not marriage.” Well put.
