Bike 4 the Brain is an annual bicycle event, which takes place just outside of Kansas City, KA, aimed at raising awareness about mental illness. Having participated in benefit rides in the past, I know what a fun and healthy way they are to unite people for a common purpose and help put an end to stigmas that often surround disability or disease. This year’s Bike 4 the Brain event has a little something for everyone, including a one mile walk/ride, four rides ranging from 10 to 62.5 miles, and a child-size tricycle challenge for adults, which looks like a hoot. In addition to educating the public about the extremely wide variety of brain-based illnesses, the event also raises money for non-profit organizations in Kansas and Missouri that provide support and services for people with mental illness.
Mental illness can arise from genetic predisposition, development disorders or from traumatic injury, and includes a wide range emotional and behavioral symptoms. Whether or not someone in your life is affected by mental illness, the Bike 4 the Brain event is a fantastic way to help support mental wellness. If you’re going to be in the area on September 7th, be sure to register for the event, and even if you can’t be sure to check out the action links below to learn more about mental illness.
